Councillor Brad Bradford (Ward 19, Beaches-East York) released the following statement on the Province’s New Fiscal Deal for Toronto:
“Today is good news for the people of Toronto. Our city needs to focus on the most important problems ahead of us: building more housing, unlocking gridlock, and achieving fiscal sustainability. I am relieved that common-sense solutions prevailed.
The Gardiner and the DVP are essential components of our regional transportation network. Premier Ford’s agreement to upload the Gardiner and the DVP will save Toronto billions in capital costs and provide important relief to Toronto taxpayers. It also means we will be able to move forward with critical housing projects, rather than wasting years reopening old decisions and trying to tear down the Gardiner.
I am also relieved at Mayor Chow’s pragmatic approach to support the Province’s redevelopment plans at Ontario Place as part of the overall new deal.
This is a big win for transit riders, with a historic return to provincial funding for operating expenses – matching their historic investments in building new transit lines. Funding for additional security and police officers on the system will help deliver a safer and more reliable transit system that can attract riders back.
I look forward to continuing to work with the Province, the Mayor and my Council colleagues to deliver on the priorities of Torontonians. Together, we can build a more affordable, safer and prosperous city for anyone who wants to call Toronto home.”
