E-News: June 8, 2024

ByBrad Bradford

Hi Friend,

I know many folks were nervous about TTC workers going on strike this week for the first time in more than 15 years. While I’m grateful that a strike was averted and a deal was reached, I empathize with everyone who woke up on Friday morning unsure if they’d be able to get to work. That kind of fear and uncertainty is not something we should aspire to, and I now look forward to learning the terms of the deal and understanding how it will impact our city budget and transit fares in the years to come.

June is a time of celebration for so many communities. I was glad to help raise the Progress Pride flag at City Hall to celebrate the start of Pride Month, and made sure the flag would fly at the East York Civic Centre. June is also National Indigenous History Month, Filipino Heritage Month, Italian Heritage Month and Portuguese Heritage Month. Sending my best wishes to everyone celebrating their cultures and the rich diversity it brings to Toronto.

I’m continuing to keep a focus on getting more housing built that people can afford, both in our community and across the city. I’m proud to have led the charge to ensure our new policy for modest apartment buildings on major streets can actually work, by providing more flexibility in the number of units. And in recent development applications in our community, I’ve made it loud and clear to the builders that I expect them to deliver as many affordable homes as possible.

As always, reach out if my office or I can be of any help. Read on for more updates from City Hall and across #BEY.

Best,

 – Brad

Updates & Announcements from City Hall

City Hall Updates

Our last Council meeting featured a number of important debates. Council overwhelmingly passed a policy to allow more housing along our major streets. Because of my motion at Committee, staff came back with recommendations to allow up to 60 units in each building, which can ensure more projects make financial sense and actually get built.

We also debated two member’s motions I brought forward. The first called to accelerate the rebuild of the Gardiner by allowing 24/7 construction, and help relieve the pain this extra congestion has caused for so many people whenever they need to drive (or even take transit downtown along parallel routes). The motion passed, and staff will come back in July with recommendations. You can learn more about the motion and work underway in this story from CTV’s Natalie Johnson.

My second motion called for establishing community safety zones around places of worship and faith-based schools. I heard from many parents and community leaders who have been concerned about the rise in hate, and who felt these safety zones could help ensure their ability to attend school and religious services in safety and peace. Unfortunately the motion failed on a tight vote, after a high-power misinformation campaign – but I will continue to look for ways to make sure everyone in our community can be safe.

Upcoming Public Consultations on the Avenues Policy Review Initiative 🆕

Following City Planning’s proposal report to the Planning & Housing Committee on the Avenues Policy Review initiative (2024.PH10.3), there have been virtual Community Consultation Meetings scheduled for June 25 and July 4, 2024.

You are invited by the City Planning Division to join a virtual Community Consultation Meeting on Tuesday, June 25 at 10:30am or Thursday, July 4 at 6:00pm (to register click either link).

The purpose of this meeting is to consult with residents and businesses in Toronto East York on the Avenues Policy Review initiative, which is one part of the Housing Action Plan (HAP). The HAP is a cornerstone of the City’s efforts to address current housing challenges. Adopted by City Council in December 2022, the HAP outlines a strong ‘made-in-Toronto’ multi-pronged approach to increase housing supply, housing choice and affordability for current and future residents.

To help accomplish these goals, the HAP directed City staff to find ways to accelerate the supply of housing by examining and remove policy barriers to new housing. Through the Avenues Policy Review, City Planning staff are looking at opportunities to:

  1. update the vision and policy direction for how Avenues will develop;
  2. extend and potentially introduce new Avenues;
  3. streamline study requirements for building new housing along Avenues; and
  4. consider opportunities to create areas of transition between Avenues and Neighbourhoods to enable more housing.

For more information about this and similar initiatives, please visit the project webpage.

Please also consider completing this short survey to share your thoughts on this initiative directly with staff and help inform the discussion during the upcoming meetings.

City of Toronto Taking Actions to Address Dangerous Dog Behaviour

As directed by Toronto City Council, the City is visiting owners of all dogs who have received a dangerous dog order. Staff are delivering a new standardized sign for owners of these dangerous dogs, which must be visibly posted on their property. Staff will also remind owners of the requirements of their dangerous dog order. Following these proactive visits, staff will continue to conduct regular compliance checks and respond to complaints to ensure compliance.

The City has also posted a public list of dangerous dogs that includes the first three digits of the postal code for the dog owner, ward number, the dog’s name, breed and colour, and the date of the dangerous act at: toronto.ca/DangerousDogs.

Most dog attacks can be prevented if dogs are kept on a leash. Residents are reminded that it is a bylaw requirement for all dog owners to keep their dogs on leashes when out in public (except when in designated dogs off-leash areas). The most impactful action owners can undertake is prevention. If residents observe a dog they believe to have a dangerous dog designation without its muzzle or in an off-leash dog park, a complaint can be made to 311 and the matter will be investigated. City of Toronto taking actions to address dangerous dog behaviour.

We understand the importance of exercise for your beloved pet. However, it is important to practice Responsible Dog Ownership and keep your dog on leash in areas that are not marked off as official dog off-leash areas.

Please take the time to visit the following dogs off-leash areas in Beaches-East York by visiting the interactive map.
